Sunday Recap 8.26.12

college students at the front for a back-to-school blessing

On Sunday we took time out to pray over everyone who will be going back to school. Here is the scripture and blessing for each group:

Elementary School Kids

  • Matthew 19:13, Matthew 5:14
  • “Sometimes it seems like the world doesn’t think kids are all that important.  All kids dream about being older and getting to do what bigger kids do, but Jesus told his disciples that they actually needed to be more like kids.  You guys have a strong faith, pray wonderfully, and really know how to love other people well.  Jesus said that you guys are an example for the rest of us, and that you’re very important.  While you are at school, you have a great opportunity to be a good example, to be a big helper, to be nice to the kids that other people are making fun of, and to do your very best work.  Not only are you very important to Jesus, but you’re very important to us. So much, that we want to pray for you as you go back to school tomorrow.”

Koinonia Kids (JH & HS)

  • 1 Timothy 4:12
  • “Timothy was a young man serious about his walk with Christ.  When he was young, Paul sent him out as a young pastor and missionary.  In that same way, I would like to send you guys out.  Don’t assume that you have to wait until you’re older to be the hands and feet of Jesus.  There are a lot of people hurting in your schools or home school networks.  There are a lot of younger kids who look up to you.  There are kids around you that are noticing that you are people of faith.  Our prayer is that you would be light to those around you who may be in dark places. We pray that you would grow in the love that God has given you, and that you would continually learn to pour that love into those who need it the most.  We are proud of you and excited about how God is going to grow your faith and use you this school year.”

College Students

  • Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8
  • “College is a transitional time of life, and there are a lot of things that come along that potentially can interfere with what God may have actually brought you to Texas State for.  Some people may think they’ll find themselves or just use this as a launching pad into the real world, but we believe that God significant things for you while you’re here. For some that may mean finding faith, for others that may mean growing up in your faith, for others you are being called to be missionaries to the campus. “

  • Matthew 25:40
  • “Teaching today is much more than teaching.  For many students, you are the most consistent person in their lives.  You are also one the greatest opportunity that the students have to see someone living out the life of a Christ-follower.  When you care for a neglected child in your classroom, you are practicing what Jesus said in Matthew 25.  Teaching is truly discipleship, and your students are a tremendous opportunity.  I’m sure they will challenge you, push your buttons, wear you out, but remember they are also God’s assignment for you this year, and you are the right person for them.  We recognize that teaching is only one part of your job and that you endure a lot of other difficulties in order to do what you’ve been called to do.  We are grateful for you, and we would like to pray for you now.”

Blessing over all schools: Brian prayed for protection, wisdom, direction, & resource working together to meet common needs, for the Church to rise up to partner, for Christians to invest into the community, for the improvement of the quality of the schools in our area to be a testimony to the activity of God around and among us.
